  • The Writing Center offers the following FAQ with one caveat, namely that the COVID-19 situation, resulting in OSU's remote delivery of instruction and student support, is dynamic and subject to change based on the lastest developments. Any changes to Writing Center services will be made in the document below, and the "last updated" date will be revised when changes are made. Thank you for your understanding.

Options for Writing Center Support in Spring 2020

What Writing Center Programs are open during the Spring 2020 term?

All Writing Center programs are operating remotely during Spring 2020. The Undergrad Research & Writing Studio and the Graduate Writing Center are operating via a combined Slack-Zoom process. The Online Writing Suite continues to operate as normal. See the programs' respective websites to get started.

I am an UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT. Which Writing Center program should I use?

If you are an undergraduate student and need a real-time consultation for writing in coursework, a resume, an important letter, a personal statement, or other writing not included here, you have two options:

  1. If you would like a real-time consultation immediately, the Undergrad Research & Writing Studio offers virtual walk-in or appointments via Zoom, Monday-Friday, 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm (closed Thursdays 4 pm - 5 pm for staff training) and Sunday 1 pm - 6 pm.
  2. If your schedule is flexible and you need a real-time consultation within the next day or two, either the Online Writing Suite or the Undergrad Research & Writing Studio can meet your needs via Zoom video conferencing.

If you are an undergraduate student and you'd like written feedback within a day or two, the Online Writing Suite is available all week and is ready to support you in your writing and research needs.

If you are an undergraduate student looking for support with grammar, editing, and other sentence-level considerations in your writing, we suggest you use the Undergrad Research & Writing Studio or the Online Writing Suite for a real-time Zoom video conference focused on grammar.

I am a GRADUATE STUDENT. Which Writing Center program should I use?

If you are a graduate student and you have questions about your writing that you would like to ask a consultant in real time, visit the Graduate Writing Center's website and complete the Writing Center's intake form.

If you are a graduate student working on any type of writing, please schedule an appointment through the GWC's online appointment request form to work with a GWC consultant via Zoom video conferencing.

If you are a graduate student working on graduate coursework, a CV/job letter, or another smaller document and would like written feedback, we suggest you submit your writing to the Online Writing Suite.

If you are a graduate student and you're looking for instruction in grammar, editing, and other sentence-level challenges in your writing, we suggest you use the Undergrad Research & Writing Studio or the Online Writing Suite for a real-time Zoom video conference focused on grammar.

I am an INTERNATIONAL STUDENT. Which Writing Center program should I use?

If you are an international student and you still reside in the U.S. Pacific Time Zone, you are welcome to use any of the Writing Center's services as described above, based on your specific writing support needs.

If you are an international student attending OSU classes from a location whose time zone is more than a few hours different from U.S. Pacific time, you are encouraged to submit your writing for Online Writing Suite written feedback--unless you are able to attend a Zoom video conference during the hours of 9am - 4pm Pacific (for graduate students) or 12pm - 5pm Pacific time (for the Undergrad Research & Writing Studio).

I am a student with an UNRELIABLE INTERNET CONNECTION. What are my options?

All of the Writing Center's programs are capable of offering telephone support. Just follow the process outlined on the program's website, and we will reach out via telephone instead of Zoom video conferencing. Additionally, the Online Writing Suite offers written feedback via e-mail.

I am FACULTY/STAFF, POST-DOC, OR ALUMNI. Which Writing Center program should I use?

Faculty/staff, post-doctoral members of the OSU community, and OSU Alumni who graduated within the previous year should use the Online Writing Suite.

Additional Information

I am a student who needs proof that I visited the Writing Center (for extra credit, required visit, etc.). How can I do that?

The Undergrad Research & Writing Studio will provide a "digital consultation confirmation" upon request following your Studio consultation. Just ask your consultant. If you forget to ask the consultant, e-mail Vanessa.Petroj at oregonstate.edu for assistance. For students who seek assistance with the Online Writing Suite, the e-mail containing your written feedback or Zoom summary serves as a digital confirmation of your consultation.

The Undergrad Reseach & Writing Studio usually has research consultants on staff. Will research consultants continue to staff the Studio this term?

Yes! We have at least one research consultant from the Valley Library on staff during each hour the Studio is open.
