Writing Studio

In the Writing Studio, you can work independently or meet with a writing consultant to talk about your project. Consultants provide support in a number of ways: asking questions to help prompt thinking, listening to you talk through ideas or organization, reading collaboratively through a section, and more. You can have a consultation at any point in the writing process, from before you have started writing to when you are polishing a final draft. No appointment is needed, and you are welcome to work in the Studio for as long as you like.

Open Hours

Monday–Thursday, 10 am–6 pm

Friday, 10 am–4 pm

Location

The Valley Library, main floor (2nd floor)

What to expect from the space

The Studio is an open study space with varied seating options, whiteboards, large-screen monitors, and fun activities for taking a break. We have hand-sanitizing and surface cleaning supplies available as needed, and the Valley Library provides free masks. When you visit during Studio hours, you’ll be greeted by a consultant. You’re welcome to use the space as long as you like, moving between independent work and writing consultation. If you have any accessibility or accommodation needs or questions, please contact us at [email protected]

Get the most out of your experience

You can prepare for a consultation by thinking about questions you have, specific goals you want to accomplish, and what type of feedback you find helpful. Common consultation activities include brainstorming, finding research sources, developing an outline or organizational plan, reviewing sections for clarity, and inviting the consultant to respond as a reader of your draft. Consultants typically ask lots of questions to facilitate your thinking around writing elements like audience, purpose, organization, and language.

Receive a confirmation email

When you have a consultation, you will fill out a paper form with your contact information. On the form, you can request a confirmation email, and your consultant will send the email after your consultation. This confirmation email can be shared with your instructor by forwarding the email, taking a screenshot, or downloading it as a PDF.

Bring the kids

Student parents are encouraged to bring their children; we’ve set aside a space in the southeast corner of the Studio with toys, books, and puzzles where children can play while their parents study and work on writing.
